Look Twice, That's Not Rice.

A few years ago, I made some rice bowl "cakes" for my husband's birthday. (He loves, loves, loves steamed rice so I thought it would be funny.) I created the rice-like frosting texture with a potato ricer and it worked perfectly.

So this month, for one of my She Knows recipe tutorials, I recreated my rice bowl cakes - with bonus instructions on how to make "fried rice" too.

These would be fun to make for a Chinese-themed party, or maybe the Chinese New Year. Who knows, I'm sure there are other kitchen creatives out their goofy enough to try it. I did. Twice.

You can find my easy instructions here.

Snorkel Snacks

Summer officially ended at our house this week with the start of school on Tuesday. But there are some lucky folks out there who are still enjoying a few more weeks of summertime fun on the beach or in the water.

Perhaps they would also enjoy these cute & crafty snorkeler cookies.

They're made with just a simple sugar cookie, a Nutter Butter wafer, some icing and a few candy accessories.

Go ahead, dive in to my easy step-by-step instructions at SheKnows.

Cocktail Critters

Serve up some cocktail garnishes that are guaranteed to put the "happy" in your next happy hour.

Create a margarita octopus, a bloody mary crocodile, and a martini snake with just a few fruits and vegetables.

My step-by-step (and sip-by-sip) instructions can be found on SheKnows.

All Smiles After the First Day

Gus smiled his way into 7th grade today.

And Bea was all grins going into 2nd grade.

First day done. Only 281 days to go!

Chocolate Robots

During a recent trip down the candy aisle at Target, I discovered these bags of my favorite candy bars in miniature form, and I couldn't help myself. I bought way more than I should have. After I got them home, I started snacking and stacking all the cute, little (delicious) shapes.

To my surprise, a chocolate robot emerged from my edible arrangement. (With the help of some chocolate candy melts to hold everything together.)

I think they're quite adorable. And dorky. Adorkable, you might even say.

These would make fun treats for a robot-themed party. Or you could have them marching across a cake holding a "Happy Birthday" sign.

You can find my chocolate robot tutorial on Handmade Charlotte. But I encourage you to experiment on your own too. You might be surprised what you can create with just a few candies.

Beep. Bop. Boop.

Our Favorite Teenager

Gus turned 13 years old today.

Thirteeeeeeeeen. Maybe if I say it slowly, the idea of Gus as a teenager will finally sink in.

We surprised him with a 6:00 a.m. wake up call on his new iPhone. Just what every teenager wants, right? Actually, we kinda wanted him to have a phone too. He's going to be in 7th grade, and there were many times last year I wished he'd had a cell phone that I could get ahold of him on the bus or after school. To say Gus was excited about his birthday gift would be an understatement - He loves it.

He was also pretty pleased with his  giant, 13-shaped chocolate chip cookie. We celebrated with giant slabs of sugary goodness, and saved some for his sleepover with friends on Saturday.

Happy 13th Birthday, big guy!
